General Information

This is one of three Epirrita species which are almost indistinguishable, certainly on markings alone. 

 

This species tends to favour more wooded habitats.

 

Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an egg.
Both sexes come to light.

Forewing length: 15-20mm.
Foodplant(s): Beech (Fagus sylvatica), birches (Betula spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), Alder (Alnus glutinosa), Hazel (Corylus avellana), broadleaved trees
Flying: One generation, late September-November
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Common
